The Dangers of Using Technology in Public to Communicate

It is amazing what you can learn about other people just by paying attention in public places like airports, malls, restaurants, grocery stores, and coffee shops. You don't even have to try to listen or read it is just out there for you to hear and view. In today's technology driven society people lose sight of personal security with their techno gadgets giving criminals easy access to information they can use. In general most people don't pay attention to the conversations they are having; they seem to think they are in there own little bubble.

Every person can become safer by realizing they aren't in a bubble and what they say in public is heard by others. Depending on just what they're talking about can be extremely detrimental personally or to their business. Control what you say in public places by conditioning yourself not to talk about important, private, and even sometimes not so private information. What may seem like nothing to you while talking to one of your friends might be the exactly what a criminal needs to know. For example a conversation like this; you need to come over this weekend my parents are out of town all weekend, that statement heard by the right person can be very dangerous and the young person involved in the conversation probably doesn't realize what they have possible done. Talking business in public places can give away important information that you may not be ready for your competitors or the public to hear about. Be particularly careful with financial information, rumors can make their way around the world in literally seconds damaging your future business.

Try listening, not ease dropping, just listen to the world around you, you will be amazed how much information you can gather just from one side of a conversation. Through engaging in this experiment your eyes will be opened to the issues of using techno gadgets in public without proper restraint.

Talking on cell phones is not the only thing that you need to mindful of in public, texting and emailing can be as problematic as verbal communication. It is easy to for people to observe your texts or emails from behind you, beside you, and even from a distance. I was heading to a personal security convention in Jacksonville via airplane and once we reached cruising altitude everybody started breaking out there lap tops and other devices; if you have flown lately you would certainly have witnessed this yourself. I was able to read or observe not only the persons sitting on my sides and even across the aisle but because I was sitting in the aisle seat I could view with clarity many devices several rows up. The person next to me was working on an email to a Board of Directors, a few rows up another person was writing their agenda for the week, and another seem to be writing some kind of personal letter; my point is none of them where even remotely interested in paying attention to the others around them opening themselves to the public.

Conclusion:

There are some products on the market today that can help you protect your privacy like 3M films to cover you screens making it more difficult for people to view them. The best protection you can have is being aware of your surroundings and resisting the urge to use your techno gadgets for important items in public. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.

Adam Sisterhen is the president of Your Personal Security Store and author of personal security and self defense articles.
